According to CubaNet, “more than fifty organizations including Cuban dissidents living inside and outside the island complained that repression remains and arbitrary arrests of human rights activists have increased in the last month, since the government of President Barack Obama announced that diplomatic relations with Cuba would resume, reports AP.”

The article goes on to explain that “opposition groups released a report on the same day officials of the island and the US began talks in Havana aimed at normalizing bilateral relations on issues such as migration and the opening of embassies, and one day after the President Obama urged Congress to begin work to end the embargo Washington imposed on Cuba in 1962.”

“The report is based on information supplied by the relatives of arrested detainees and organizations including the Council of Human Rights Rapporteurs and Hablemos Press.”

“The report also states that between December 17 and January 17 there were a partial number of 103 documented arbitrary arrests”.

“According to the Rapporteur Council, last December 463 arbitrary arrests were recorded on the island, 82 more than in November, and 17 more than in October.” January figures are not yet available.
