According to El Nuevo Herald, “Cuba remains the only country in Latin America rated as ‘not free’ with regards to internet access,” based on the Freedom on the Net 2014 index.” The report is the “fifth annual survey of internet freedom in the world, which analyzes the case of 65 countries between May 2013 and May 2014.”
“Freedom on the Net 2014”, presented on Thursday, “concludes that internet freedom in the world has declined for the fourth consecutive year, with 36 of 65 countries analyzed in the study who have experienced a negative trend during the period”.
“While governments earlier chose secretive internet control, countries have rapidly adopted new laws that legitimize repression and criminalize digital dissent” according to Freedom House.
In addition, “last year government pressure increased on independent news websites, and there was an increase in the number of individuals imprisoned or persecuted for their digital activities…”
