[Miami, Florida] – Over the last six weeks, the world bore witness to the adoption of two momentous resolutions by the Council of Europe and the European Parliament. These groundbreaking resolutions established crucial guidelines concerning Cuba’s role as a strategic ally of Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine and its consequent implications.
1. The first resolution highlighted Cuba’s role as a strategic ally of Russia in its war of aggression against Ukraine, bringing this significant matter to the forefront of international attention.
2. As a result of this revelation, the second resolution declared that the Cuban dictatorship is ineligible to continue receiving funds from Europe due to its involvement in supporting the aggression against Ukraine.
3. The guidelines set forth in these resolutions entrust the Council of Europe with the essential task of reviewing and potentially upending the PDCA in response to the revelations brought to light.
4. Moreover, the resolutions strongly condemn the brutal torture, imprisonment, and human rights violations committed against political dissidents in Cuba, including children, raising the alarm about these grave violations.
5. In conclusion, the resolutions call for the application of sanctions along the lines of the Magnitsky Act against Cuban authorities, including Diaz Canel himself, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the need for decisive action.
In light of the embarrassing events at the EU-CELAC and Eurolat, the Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba seeks answers to fundamental questions.
Why?
Why, after the historical passing of Resolutions 2506 from PACE and 289/23 from the European Parliament, has the executive branch of the Eurozone, led by MP Sanchez, Ms. Von der Leyden, and Mr. Borrell, chosen to openly and brazenly disregard the provisions of these legally mandated resolutions?
What Motivates the European Executive?
The European Executive’s challenge to the authority of President Metsola and President Charanzova and their insistence on violating the described resolutions raises concerns. Is the European Executive determined to undermine efforts to support Ukraine, or does it support, at all costs, the horrifying acts of killing, torturing, and violating the rights of the Cuban people?
The Foundation for Human Rights in Cuba demands answers to these vital questions. It is imperative for the European Executive to provide clarity on their actions and intentions, given the significance of the resolutions passed by the Council of Europe and the European Parliament.
In conclusion, the resolutions call for the application of sanctions along the lines of the Magnitsky Act against Cuban authorities, including Diaz Canel himself, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the need for decisive action by the EU.
