As published in WLRN, “It’s been almost a year since President Obama announced the U.S. was normalizing relations with communist Cuba. Some Cuban dissidents embrace the move. But others – including artist Danilo Maldonado, known as ‘El Sexto’ – say it’s done little to improve human rights on the island.”
El Sexto is in Miami this week, picking up his Vaclev Havel prize which was awarded to him earlier this year by the Human Rights Foundation, visiting colleagues and friends, and also telling the important story, not only of his personal experiences the past year in Cuba, which included 10 months in a Cuban jail for attempting an artistic performance last December in Havana, but a broader story of the ongoing human rights violations on the island.
“There have been no positive changes,” he told WLRN, referring to the Cuban government’s ongoing systematic repression, human rights abuses, and intolerance.
